Two years after becoming the first nation to legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes, Thailand has become the first nation in Southeast Asia to decriminalize the drug. Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul signed a ministerial announcement on February 8, 2022 officially removing cannabis and hemp from category 5 from the country’s list of narcotics. “Actually, cannabis has many medical benefits, it is not different from other herbs, and we are doing our best for the Thai people to enjoy the medical and economic benefits of it,” said the minister. The removal of cannabis from the Thai list of Category 5 narcotics also includes opium, marks an important step, which “represents a bright light of rationality in Southeast Asia, where most nations have intensely punitive drug regimes that do little or no distinction between marijuana and harder drugs”.
The legalization movement is also seemingly out of character for the reactionary administration of Prayut Chan-o-cha, which came to power in a coup in 2014 and has been anything but liberal, and has been notoriously intolerant of criticism.
